This is the relic of a general Nam Yihung of the Joseon.
He is a son of Nam Yu who died at the Noryang naval battle with Yi sunsin, a famous general of the Joseon during Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592). After his father died, he devoted himself to practice archery and riding and passed the military service examination in 1602. He put down Yi Gwal's rebel and became a military commander. But he killed himself after defeating in a war with the Manchurian invaders during Byeongjahoran (the Manchurian Invasion of Korea in 1636).
Among his relics, there is a pair of Guui made of a deerskin for use in self-defense and Gonryongpo that was given to him by King Injo after putting down Yi Gwal's rebel. It was damaged a lot so hard to recognize its shape. And there are six pieces of his and his family's identity tags made of an ivory, a wood and an antler. 500 pieces of his relics including the ancient books, letters, portraits and a writ of appointment are preserved, too.
They are regarded as the important materials for studying the life style and the style of a dress of the early 17th century. |
