This Dangeui has the patterns of the Chinese letter 'long life', 'happiness' and the patterns of the seven treasures, the pomegranates and the flowers on a light brown ground. It is from the mid Joseon.
Dangeui is the formal dress that the women of the royal court or the noble family put on over the jeogori (a Korean-style jacket). It looks like a jeogori but its front body and back is longer and reached to the knees and its side is opened.
Its outer side and the lining is all light brown and the patterns of the Chinese letter 'long life', 'happiness', and the patterns of the seven treasures, the pomegranates and the Buddhist cross are embroidered and the patterns of the clouds are embroidered on the lining.
Its collar is sharp called Dangkogit and it sleeves become narrower from the Jindong (the width of an armhole of a sleeve) to the end. It is called Jikseon (strait) Baerye.
Its breast tie inside is thick purple but outer breast tie is torn apart.
The pattern of the Chinese letter 'long life' and 'happiness' on the sleeves are the same as the letters on the body, but it looks more brilliant because they are embroidered with the gold threads. The patterns of the Buddhist cross shows that the influence of the Buddhism was still remained to the upper classes of the Joseon that respect Confucianism. |
