This is a Hoejang cheogori (the colorful strips of cloth for trimmings on a woman's coat) that has the different color of a collar, a cuff and a breast tie. It was founded in the stomach of the image of young Buddha of Sangwonsa Temple, Mt. Odaesan when it was repainted with gold color in 1975. It is presumed that it was put on by someone of 1460s because this image was made in 1466 when King Sejo visited this temple several times. It has a 52.4 cm length and a 34 cm width. Its width is rather wide so its length of the sleeve and body looks short.
It has the typical character of the early Josoen's such as a square shape of collar called Mokpangit, a straight sleeve and a short and narrow breast tie.
It is well balanced and still keeps its indigo blue color well. The light and deep side of the same color were arranged by turns, it tells that our ancestors didn't dependent only on white or a primary color.
It is presumed that the owner of this chegori was Jang, one of the royal concubines of King Sejo because some letters, Jangssisodae were written on the right side of the back. It is the oldest one among existing chegoris and it shows the typical character of the chegori of the early Joseon.
It is regarded as the important material for studying the style of the dress in its composition and color. |
