A Jeju horse is often called "Jorangmal of Jejudo". The horse is named "Gwahama or Toma", which means that when the horse goes under the fruit trees, it is short enough to pass safely. The female is about 117cm in the length and the male is about 115cm in the length. The horse is meek and it has good resistance to disease and is long lived. Though most Jeju horses are brown, some have dark-brown, grey, and black colors. The fore part of a Jeju horse is low, and its back is high. The horse is long but overall it is even smaller than other horses. According to the records, during the year of 1073 (King Munjong of Joseon dynasty) and the year of 1258 (King Gojong of Joseon dynasty), Jeju horses were paid in tribute to the Won dynasty of China. In 1273 (King Wonjong), Won dynasty set up ranches in Jejudo, where the Mongolian horses were raised. The Jeju horse of Jejudo contributed to agriculture, and the number of horses used to approximate 20,000. However, due to modernization, the number of horses has decreased remarkably. To keep the horse's blood, the Jeju horse is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
