Danggan is a pole to hoist flags used for special occasions in a temple. Dangganjiju is a pair of props to hold the flagpoles.
These props are 66cm apart from each other. The sculptural details of these structures, such as the rounding of the edges and the vertical linear patterns are the typical design technique used during the Unified Silla Period. Around threee sides of each prop except the inner side is a 1m long engraving. Each prop has two holes in the upper and lower parts to bottom to fasten the flag. Judging from that the whole structure is rather dull and heavy and that Donghwasa Temple was founded in the seventh year(832) of King Heungdeok's reign, this dangganjiju was made in the later years of the Silla Period. |
